Background of the study
Hashtag-based neologisms have emerged as a distinctive element of digital communication on Twitter. In Nigeria, users employ hashtags not only to categorize content but also to create new words and expressions that capture emerging cultural and social phenomena (Ibrahim, 2023). These lexical innovations often spread rapidly, reflecting the dynamic nature of online discourse. This study investigates the processes underlying the creation of hashtag-based neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends by comparing various movements. It examines word formation processes such as blending, clipping, and affixation that contribute to lexical innovation. Moreover, it considers sociocultural drivers including political mobilization, youth culture, and digital activism that facilitate the rapid adoption and normalization of these new expressions (Okafor, 2024). The study aims to bridge the gap between traditional lexicology and modern digital linguistics, thereby enhancing our understanding of language evolution in an online context.
Statement of the problem
Despite the proliferation of hashtag-based neologisms in Nigerian Twitter discourse, there is limited systematic research on how these new expressions are formed and spread. Many studies focus on the social implications of hashtags while neglecting the linguistic mechanisms that drive word creation (Chukwu, 2023). This gap limits our ability to understand the impact of digital media on lexical innovation and hampers the development of comprehensive models of language change in online environments (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the study
• Examine the types of hashtag-based neologisms present in Nigerian Twitter trends.
• Identify the word formation processes involved.
• Evaluate the impact of these neologisms on traditional vocabulary.
Research questions
• What hashtag-based neologisms are prevalent in Nigerian Twitter discourse?
• Which word formation processes drive their creation?
• How do these innovations affect conventional language norms?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of hashtag-based neologisms in shaping Nigerian digital language. Its findings will contribute to theories of lexical innovation and offer practical insights for educators and policymakers in understanding digital language evolution (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to hashtag-based neologisms on Nigerian Twitter and does not extend to other platforms or offline contexts.
Definitions of terms
• Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions.
• Hashtag Trends: Popular hashtags that encapsulate emerging cultural themes.
• Lexical Innovation: The process of developing new vocabulary.
